Update – May 2020
We wanted to let you all know that due to the current Covid 19 situation we have taken the difficult decision to postpone our expedition to Tanzania until 2021. We are very disappointed to have to do this, but the safety and wellbeing of the team and the communities that they will be working with in Tanzania has been foremost in our decision making. All of the team members are still working behind the scenes on fundraising and preparation and are determined to make the expedition and community project a success.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported the expedition so far and ask for your understanding about the postponement. We look forward to letting you know about the updated plans in the future and know that this delay will strengthen the resolve of the young people to succeed in their aims.
Forward to Tanzania 2021 – we can, we try, we succeed!
Please help us to continue bringing positive change to young people’s lives.
For the safety of our users and staff we are currently closed due to the Covid-19 situation. This will impact not only the important work that we undertake with our many users, but also the ability of the Centre to raise funds to support our work.
We know that this is a difficult and uncertain time for many people, but we would like to ask our community to help us weather this storm. We would be really grateful for any support that you are able to give.
We have set up a Go Fund Me page and Virgin Money Giving campaign, please click on the links below if you are able to help us with a donation, however small.

Thank you for any help that you are able to give, we look forward to seeing you all again at the Centre very soon.
Please stay safe and well and take care of each other, with best wishes from all of the Shadwell team
Following government recommendations we have sadly decided to cancel all of our Youth Club and Junior Club activities, including trips, until further notice. We are very sorry to have to do this, but know that you will understand that we must look after the safety of our users and staff. Everyone at the Centre really looks forward to seeing you all again as things return to normal. We will update further as we know more and hope that you all take care and look after each other in the meantime.
Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre is taking a group of young people on the immense journey of climbing Kilimanjaro (5,895m), Africa’s highest mountain and the highest freestanding mountain in the world.
Whilst in Tanzania, the group of 10 young people will work on a community project with street children, working with a charity which takes young people with no families from the streets to a safe place where education, stability and care form the basis of a new life.
In order to achieve our goals we will need to raise up to £35,000 for the expedition and community project. The members of the group will complete individual challenges to raise money independently, as well as working as a group on fundraising events.
This expedition will be a huge challenge that will push individuals to their limits, testing their courage, endurance and mental strength. Members of the group will gain many life skills on this journey, including teamwork, leadership, communication and decision making in extreme circumstances.
The expedition offers truly life changing experiences as participants will assist in the transformation of young people’s lives through the street child project.
As a whole the impact on their lives will be a positive step in them becoming thoughtful young citizens with a true understanding of the wider world and forming life-long friendships across cultural divides.
If you are able to support the group to succeed in their goals, you can donate via the fundraising page at:

Six young people from Shadwell Basin and six from the Lindley Educational Trust have travelled to Outward Bound in Ullswater in the Lake District to participate in a leadership programme for Black and Ethnic Minority coaches. This innovative and unique programme has been funded by The North Face through their “Right to Explore” project.
The project has been designed to introduce new young leaders into the outdoors, broaden their horizons and give them opportunities to develop skills leading to employment.
The team has been made up of young people from Shadwell Basin and the Lindley Educational Trust in Manchester, who will be engaged on the project for a year. After their first week at Outward Bound it is planned that they will be paired with local schools and will mentor students through their first experience in the outdoors on their own trip to Outward Bound. The year will conclude with opportunities for work experience at Shadwell Basin, the Lindley Trust, The North face or Outward Bound. Ultimately the final goal is to give these young people the skills and confidence to move into the world of work.
This year our Summer Holiday Project will run Monday to Fridays from 29th July to 23rd August. The programme is open to young people aged 9-18 who are able to swim and are confident in deep water.
There will be a mixture of adventurous activities including: kayaking, canoeing, sailing, rowing, climbing, high ropes and mountain biking together with trips on the River Thames in kayaking and sailing.
Dates: Week 1: 29th July to 2nd August / Week 2: 5th to 9th Aug / Week 3: 12th to 16th August / Week 4: 19th to 23rd August.
To register weekly you will need to attend at 9.00am onwards each Monday to secure a place for the week. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Daily places may be available after weekly places have been given out. Cost: £20 per week, £30 for two or more siblings, £5 daily. Regular members who attend throughout the year may book in advance, please contact Will for information.
The North Face gave our youth members a much needed boost recently with a donation of clothing and equipment. This will be used on residentials, expeditions and by young people completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Centre is really appreciative of this donation and would like to thank The North Face for their support. Kitting young people out for residentials and expeditions can be a large expense and this equipment will allow young people from one of the poorest boroughs in the country to experience the wilderness areas of the UK in comfort and safety.
This year we are once again running our very popular after school sessions for 5-8 year olds. These sessions are designed to encourage independence and confidence whilst children learn new skills and make new friends.
Activities vary each week and include indoor and outdoor climbing, bell boating, open canoeing and team challenges.

Well done to our intrepid Bronze D of E group for completing their training expedition in the Peak District at the start of April. The group successfully completed their training – planning their route, navigating, camping and cooking some tasty food along the way. The team stayed in Edale to prepare and train for their expedition, practicing campcraft, navigation, first aid and learning the most important skill of all – how to pack all of their equipment into their rucksack. Cold weather, wind, rain and heavy rucksacks didn’t dampen their spirits on the expedition and the team kept on track with some great navigation.
